Thermal decompression mask (TDM) --AKA The Masque This patented invention was designed to be used as an aid to prevent and decrease facial, scalp, and/or neck swelling. It is most useful for patients who have undergone a variety of surgical procedures but also useful for facial edema from other causes such as allergic reactions on the face from insect bites, medications or various foods, or other types of edema. The indications are extensive, but not limited to the following: 1. Facial reconstructive operations 2. Facial and neck rejuvenation procedures, (base lift, neck lift, brow lift.) 3. Excision of scalp lumps or other tumors on the face where excessive swelling might occur. (eg . Lipomas, large pilar cysts or salivary gland tumors.) 4. Various forms of headache where ice has been found to be a value but difficult/cumbersome to apply. 5. Carotid Endarterectomy. 6. Various forms of neck operations, especially those where flaps are developed such as thyroidectomy or parathyroidectomy. 7. Rehabilitation after facial burns to decrease keloid formation and improve scarring.. 8. Postoperative environment were keloid has formed after excision. The TDM is a three layer mask with a generous opening for the eyes and nose. This permits one to use it for periods of 30 to 60 minutes while reading or carrying out various activities that do not require one to speak. Provides graduated compression to the scalp brow, cheeks and neck so that the flow of the swelling fluids are facilitated to leave the face and re-enter the circulatory system while at the same time preventing further fluid exudation. I have measured the pressure that the mask compresses on the face to be 20 to 30 mm. Hg. This is at a level that has been established to promote lymphatic drainage, prevent further exudation of fluid while at the same time permitting better capillary perfusion to allow for the transportation of oxygen and other nutrients. The middle silicone layer will hold temperature extremes for some time, but will naturally trend to equilibrate to the surrounding environment. It can be cooled (or heated if needed for other purposes requiring heat) multiple times for an indefinite amount of uses; it can even be reused if the inner or outer layer needs replacement. The inner layer makes for easy application in the postoperative state and buffer to the skin to the temperature extremes. Silicone gel has been found to be very effective when placed directly over postoperative wounds. While the silicone of this mask will not be in direct contact with the skin, these properties are likely to be beneficial to postoperative healing. Because there is no other product like this on the market, I have been granted a patent under number 12728033. issued 09/08/2026
